According to industry sources, Jeff Asch and Ed Benkin are among those who will lose their sports update shifts on KYW Newsradio on the weekend to WIP people.
In a previous post, we reported that WIP, a fellow CBS station will provide sports updates for KYW on the weekend.
Also, we are hearing that Tom Maloney will lose his shift, but continue to report from sporting events in town.

Asch had to go. His reports were pompous and not funny.

Just a clarification please. Can I now assume that KYW’s quarter hour sports weekend segments will now be handled by whoever is on duty for updates at WIP; or will their sports simply disappear on the weekends?

Its ashame what is happening. And frankly it doesnt make any sense. What are they going to do when the economy comes back around, keep running a half-ass radio station / newspaper / TV station.
We all know this is going to come around and when it does, who will be left to report it??

Al Novack needs to go as well. His reports are often fluff pieces on “how commuters are coping with the weather”.
Weak

Sometimes a bad economy is a motivator to do things that make good business sense. Having sports update anchors at two co-owned stations is illogical. Cost cutting is a very rational thing to do, and this is an opportunity to do just that. Why would you need two people to provide a total of four updates per hour? One person can do that just fine.
And James, what, praytell, does a newspaper have to do with any of this? Moreover, the TV station is not involved, so that point is illogical as well.

No TV and Radio has nothing to do with this particular story, but TV stations and Newspapers are cutting people as well, that was my point, not that KYW was cutting newspaper and TV people…sorry, it was more of a general comment in relation to the industry as a whole.

Indeed everyone is cutting people, because everyone is feeling the pain of the economy. Somtimes it takes the pain to get organizations to become more effecient, as appears to be the case here.
