CBS 3’s EYEWITNESS NEWS IS NUMBER TWO

IN KEY DEMOGRAPHIC ACROSS ALL NEWSCASTS

FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1995;

AUDIENCE GROWING DAY AND NIGHT ON BOTH STATIONS

 

Philadelphia, May 26, 2011 – CBS 3’s Eyewitness News wrapped up the May 2011 Nielsen ratings period with a strong number-two showing in the key demographic, Adults 25-54, in all newscasts for the first time in 16 years. Eyewitness News placed second 4:30 to 7 a.m., at 6 p.m. and at 11 p.m.    

The numbers gave Anchor Ukee Washington another reason to celebrate this week. Washington, who celebrated 25 years with Eyewitness News on Wednesday, can join his early-to-rise Co-anchor Erika von Tiehl, Meteorologist Kate Bilo and Traffic Reporter Bob Kelly in celebration of the May ratings book.  The morning team’s viewers were up 24 percent in rating in the key Adults 25-54 demographic from 5 to 7 a.m. over last year.  At the same time, CBS 3’s 4:30 a.m. newscast, less than a year old, is proving that there is an audience for news at the crack of dawn, with that time period up 52 percent over last year.

The good news continued at both 6 and 11 p.m. led by the team of Chris May and Susan Barnett, with Meteorologist Kathy Orr and Sports Director Beasley Reece. CBS 3 was up 13 percent in rating Monday through Friday in Adults 25-54 at 6 p.m, the only station to show growth in the demo at 6 p.m.  The late newscasts also performed well.  Eyewitness News at 10 on The CW Philly, anchored by Susan Barnett and Dave Huddleston, was up 25 percent in rating in the key demo, the only 10 p.m. newscast in the market to show growth, while CBS 3’s Eyewitness News at 11 finished the rating book less than one rating point behind WPVI in the  Adults 25-54 demo.

Philly May Sweeps Ratings

From 6ABC:

Philadelphia, PA – A confirmed tornado in Philadelphia highlighted a month of stormy weather, and when tri-state area residents needed to know, 6abc Action News was the news they trusted!   Each rainy day, viewers turned to the local news leader, especially in the morning, for the latest weather information.  Action News Mornings – With Matt O’Donnell, Tamala Edwards, Karen Rogers, and Meteorologist David Murphy nearly beats the entire competition combined!  With a 4.4 HH rating, 6abc doubles up all the other local station’s ratings (NBC 1.7, CBS 2.0, & Fox 1.3).

6abc’s consistent ratings continue throughout the broadcast day.  At noon, Action News enjoys its largest share, owning 71% of all news viewers.  With a 6.5 rating, 6abc easily doubles the competition combined.  At 5pm & 6pm, viewers are equally committed, with Action News beating the competition combined, and winning the time periods with ratings of 6.9 and 8.1 respectively.

News consumers end their days where they started – on 6abc.  Ratings for Action News at 11 surpass CBS by 22%, double the ratings on NBC, and beat Fox’s 10pm offering by nearly 3-1.

News viewers depend on 6abc for the latest weather information, breaking news, and coverage of the stories that matter most to the tri-state.  On May 18^th, when a tornado touched down in Philadelphia, Action News Meteorologist Adam Joseph was first on the air to report the potential danger.  On April 19^th, the world watched as Prince William and Kate Middleton joined in marriage, and Action News’ Alicia Vitarelli was the only local reporter in England to cover it.  And two days later, Action News was the only local station to travel to Rome for the beatification of Pope John Paul II.  Another feature story presented by Action News drew not only ratings, but also a lot of water cooler chat.  Brian Taff’s special report on “Doomsday prophecies” created a stir, and left many wondering what will happen on May 21^st.

Here’s Chris Sowers, the new weekend morning meteorologist for 6ABC.  He replaces Melissa Magee, who moves to weekend evenings, to replace Adam Joseph, who moves to the new 6ABC 4 p.m. show, which debuts May 26.
