Philly May Sweeps Ratings

From 6ABC:

Philadelphia, PA – A confirmed tornado in Philadelphia highlighted a month of stormy weather, and when tri-state area residents needed to know, 6abc Action News was the news they trusted!   Each rainy day, viewers turned to the local news leader, especially in the morning, for the latest weather information.  Action News Mornings – With Matt O’Donnell, Tamala Edwards, Karen Rogers, and Meteorologist David Murphy nearly beats the entire competition combined!  With a 4.4 HH rating, 6abc doubles up all the other local station’s ratings (NBC 1.7, CBS 2.0, & Fox 1.3).

6abc’s consistent ratings continue throughout the broadcast day.  At noon, Action News enjoys its largest share, owning 71% of all news viewers.  With a 6.5 rating, 6abc easily doubles the competition combined.  At 5pm & 6pm, viewers are equally committed, with Action News beating the competition combined, and winning the time periods with ratings of 6.9 and 8.1 respectively.

News consumers end their days where they started – on 6abc.  Ratings for Action News at 11 surpass CBS by 22%, double the ratings on NBC, and beat Fox’s 10pm offering by nearly 3-1.

News viewers depend on 6abc for the latest weather information, breaking news, and coverage of the stories that matter most to the tri-state.  On May 18th, when a tornado touched down in Philadelphia, Action News Meteorologist Adam Joseph was first on the air to report the potential danger.  On April 19th, the world watched as Prince William and Kate Middleton joined in marriage, and Action News’ Alicia Vitarelli was the only local reporter in England to cover it.  And two days later, Action News was the only local station to travel to Rome for the beatification of Pope John Paul II.  Another feature story presented by Action News drew not only ratings, but also a lot of water cooler chat.  Brian Taff’s special report on “Doomsday prophecies” created a stir, and left many wondering what will happen on May 21st

It’s a record setting May for 6abc.com!  The #1 TV news website in the region recorded more than 26 million page views this month, and has recorded more than 135 million page views so far this year, putting the site on track for a record breaking 2011.  Now, 6abc.com is proud to kick off another milestone with the launch of 6at4.com.  The innovative and interactive hub dedicated to the new Action News at 4pm newscast features more headlines, more ways to get connected and more ways to move closer to your world.

  1. Oprah goes bye-bye and we are now in heavy “Cut and Paste” mode…..

I guess someone hasn’t discovered what to do with the free time..

  2. Laura,
Could you tell us if you heard anything on Ray Didinger. (sp) I thought I heard on wip that he had heart surgery.
    Thank You

  3. Ray and Glenn Macnow are honeymooning in Vermont

  4. Why doesn’t WPVI ever release ratings for 11 AM? Is it because The Price Is Right is winning over The View? If so, I find that hard to believe since Philly might be the BEST city for margin of victory for The View over TPIR.

  5. The View is a network show, so when it comes to bragging about how well the local management is doing, their releases deal with the local product.

I believe that in Philadelphia, the View beats The Price, and that the numbers for The Price have also eroded since Bob Barker split. Look at how low the numbers are at noon for Channel 3 since they gave up a full 30-minute noon newscast.

    • “The View is a network show, so when it comes to bragging about how well the local management is doing, their releases deal with the local product.”

Marv, they also list Good Morning America, so your theory is wrong.

I know ratings are down for TPiR in the past 4 years, but not as much as you’d like to think. The ratings with Bob Barker were extraordinarily high for daytime. Ratings for TPiR have leveled out, and are at a level where CBS is happy.

CBS3’s ratings for noon actually did not go down. Ratings are actually steady or even a bit higher. The show does cost much less to produce and takes much less time in studio.

  6. By listing the local ratings of the network’s Good Morning America, CH6 is showing its great local strength. Nationally, NBC-TV’s Today Show is the major morning winner. How can it be that it loses in Philadelphia? Because here GMA is on channel 6.
It is the same for nationally syndicated Wheel Of Fortune and Jeopardy. They are both popular shows nationally, but when they air on channel 6, they are very popular shows.

The station’s news release is about what they see as their local accomplishments.

    • Dude…Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy are the highest rated syndicated shows in history. They regularly beat out all network programming. I don’t think the ratings are because they’re on WPVI. They’re just popular.

I am still surprised that they don’t list their ratings for The View. Philly gets a really large margin of victory over TPiR.
