Philly TV and Radio

Hello,
 
I have a question about CBS3, and no, its not a question re: Alycia Lane.   It has to do with the traffic guy, Bob Kelly.
 
I admire his passion and enthusiasm but why does he use terms/words that NOBODY locally ever uses?
 
For example, the Ben Franklin Bridge is the “Benny” and the PA Turnpike is the “Pennsy”.  I ran these words by some colleagues and they were all bewildered.  Is there some inside joke I am missing?  Nobody else on local TV talks like  this when it comes to traffic (like Dorothy on FOX29 or John Ogden on NBC10). 
 
He also has trouble enunciating “THE” at times.  It comes off more of a “DA”… such as “Da Curve” or “Da Shoulder
 
“Bobby” seems like a nice guy and probably is great to be around, but he takes himself a bit too seriously.
