6ABC Wins Sweeps

Yes, I’m just posting the press release – deal with it!

And The Winner Is…6abc Action News!

Local News Leader Records Clean Sweep in February

Over 1.2 Million Local Viewers Watch Academy Awards

(Philadelphia, PA) – While the Oscars may have had a few surprises, the February ratings book turned out just as expected.  Once again, Action News remains the most watched local news source in the Philadelphia television market.  But the #1 newscast did more than just win.  Action News increased its share of viewership in many dayparts.  The undisputed local news leader improved its advantage over the competition at 5am, 530am, 6am, Noon, & 6pm!  At 11pm, Action News with Jim Gardner retained its 2 point share advantage over CBS3, while increasing its ratings advantage by 7%.

6abc’s strength is most evident at Noon, 5pm and 6pm, where Action News far outpaces the competition combined.  The midday edition of Action News records a 7 rating / 23 share.  CBS3 and Fox29 score a 2/6 & 1/4 respectively.  Action News at 5pm earns an 8/16, with NBC10 delivering a 2/4 and Fox29 posting a 2/4. At 6pm, Action News with Jim Gardner earns a 10/19.  NBC10 is a distant second place with a 3/6, with CBS3 slightly behind (3/5).  More people watch Action News at Noon, 5pm, and 6pm than any late news program in the market!

6abc.com continues to outpace the other local TV websites.  6abc.com online and mobile applications recorded more than 23 million estimated page views in February. With over 77 million page views so far in 2011, 6abc.com is up 28% from 2010, and is pacing for a record year!

Oprah continues to draw buzz, as she journeys through her final 25th season, earning increased ratings.  Up 3 share points and 10% in ratings from last February, the numbers indicate viewers will continue to watch until she closes the books in May.

Eclipsed only by Super Bowl ratings, every year, The Academy Awards is the second most watched television program in America!  Locally, 1,234,000 viewers (age 2+) tuned in to see The King’s Speech win best picture.  Also in February, a new star emerged on America’s favorite game show – Jeopardy!.  “Watson”, the IBM super computer, beat the show’s two most celebrated and successful players, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, in a three day contest of the ultimate trivia minds.  On 6abc, Jeopardy! enjoyed a 23% ratings spike on those nights, with an incredible 13 rating / 11 share!  These Jeopardy! shows were the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th most watched programs of the rating period, trailing only to the Oscar audience.  Nationwide, an estimated 20-million people tuned into the final night of the tournament to see Watson win the man vs. machine competition.

Action News is clearly the most watched news brand in the market, leading 6abc to be the most watched television station (on broadcast AND cable).  Sign on to sign off, 6abc earns a 4.7 HHRtg.  CBS3 is second with a 3.1/7.  FOX29 and NBC10 both record a 2.5/6.

  1. Though there are many reasons for their success, clearly the way they have embraced the web and mobile technologies has aided heavily in their success. I love their iPad app as well as their mobile offerings.

  2. 5th paragraph: “Locally, 1,234,000 viewers (age 2+) tuned in to see The King’s Speech win best picture”

Is this really correct? Do they actually measure viewers ages 2 and up? I have a hard time thinking this is correct. Is that a typo? Can someone on the know (Marv? Hal Sacks?) clarify?

My 4 year old nephew certainly wasnt watching.

  3. Waste of space.

  4. It’s great that you run the entire release with all the numbers. This information is not accessible easily anywhere else.

This particular set of numbers says the 3 also rans are still doing virtually nothing successfully to challenge 6’s sometimes mediocre product.

  5. Always good to hear from Marv. He takes the “cut and paste” jobs and actually does some analysis. For that, I am appreciative.

Major WJ “Shout-outs” to Marv and Hal Sacks! Love their perspective
